    Three generations of library lovers

by PE, about 1 month ago

I immigrated to San Diego from Mexico at age 5, along with my brother and my parents. My mother decided to get her college degree (the first in her family) and start a new career here. I remember fondly spending time with her at so many different libraries throughout her time studying humanities. She instilled in me not only a love of books, but a love of libraries, including many San Diego County libraries. Libraries then, from my young perspective, felt grand, special, and endless.

My love of libraries continued into college. I spent many, many evenings studying at the... Continue reading

    A family time

My wife and I love reading - everything from paperbacks to comics. We love sitting inside and enjoying each other's company away from chaos, while reading books. My 8 year son os an iPad kid. The screen is his life. However, ever since we took the library membership, we have been going frequently to the library to take books and have been taking him along with us as well. Nothing extreme happened overnight, but my son has started reading manga now. He's also less resistant to going to the library since you guys provide such a fun and calm place... Continue reading

My grandfather, William B. Sears was a radio announcer and had television programs in Philadelphia in the 1940's and 1950's. He was also an author and travelled to Africa for the Baha'i Faith. We had records that early in his career in the 1930's, he had written various one act plays that were published by the Dramatic Publishing Company. Through websites like https://www.worldcat.org (A worldwide catalogue) we were able to locate copies of 4 of his one act plays. Because the San Diego County Library is part of the Interlibrary Loan program, I was able to just go into the... Continue reading

Where a child’s mind grows freely

by Nerd Mom, about 1 month ago
I started taking my daughter regularly to our local library when she was 4 years old so that she may learn things that I have trouble teaching. Every book is infinite knowledge and ideas to get us through life in the eyes of a child. She loves choosing bedtime books, doing the activities, learning on the computers, doing the puzzles. I am so grateful that the libraries keep having resources and kind faces to keep that community alive.

    The San Marcos Library <3

I’ve been goin to the San Marcos branch since I was a kid. From the clubs to playing PBS Kids games on the computer. Every summer my nephew and I attend the kids STEAM activities and reading challenges. The library has always been the safe, fun, air conditioned place we go to when we just feel like getting out of the house for a little.I appreciate all the staff and every since last book on the shelves. I often will pick up a book to read while my nephew jumps at skyzone to pass the time. Over all I given... Continue reading

I visit the library either online or by going to a branch every single week. I love that the library stores the books I love to read, and that with new vision issues I can get what I love either as an audio book or read it on the Libby or Kindle app. I even was able to utilize the 3-D printer to make a couple of useful items for a very reasonable price. Libraries are a treasure, and offer so much for everyone.

    Library love

by B, about 1 month ago

I am in love with books but stayed away from the library because of fear of returning them late and experiencing the wrath of staff.

After Covid I started returning to the library and to my joyful surprise found that not only have the fines been eliminated (if you follow the guidelines) but that my books will be automatically renewed! WOW! Life changing experience!!!!!

The librarians are amazingly knowledgeable and willing to help.

Not only that, there’s Libby! How I adore audiobooks!!!!!

I now feel so much at home in the library and am branching out into the events you... Continue reading

    Family tradition

by KW, about 1 month ago
Growing up, my mom took us to the library all the time. Getting books was always an exciting thing. When I moved back here with my kids, I was so excited to carry on that tradition and take my kids to the library I grew up with- only it was the new and improved library! So, it was even better and the kids area so much more fun to check out. For the last few years I’ve been taking my kids to get books. They even have special made library book bags that are heavy duty and can hold lots... Continue reading

    Love for community literacy

I love taking my kids to the library. We visit the Carlsbad Dove Library, Eureka Library, Vista Library, and the Oceanside Library Mobile. It started when they were toddlers. We came in for the reading time and play time. We checked out books and read them before nap time and bedtime. I checked out books about phonics and math to get ideas on how to introduce reading and math to the kids. My kids also love playing the educational games on the library computer, color, and play board games and puzzles. During the summer, we come to the library to... Continue reading

Collaborating With Seniors to Learn Technology

by Sergi - Your Tech Tutor, about 1 month ago

I have the great fortune of providing technology classes to seniors in Encinitas four times a month! Working alongside the library staff, we’ve identified which topics our community appreciates most and tailored our teaching styles to how they prefer to learn.

The staff has been incredible, assisting me with everything from managing sign-ups to designing flyers. Because of this support, we’ve successfully expanded from two iPhone classes a month to including two dedicated Samsung and Motorola sessions as well. Of course, none of this would be possible without the Friends of the Library program, which has been monumental to our... Continue reading
