Three generations of library lovers
I immigrated to San Diego from Mexico at age 5, along with my brother and my parents. My mother decided to get her college degree (the first in her family) and start a new career here. I remember fondly spending time with her at so many different libraries throughout her time studying humanities. She instilled in me not only a love of books, but a love of libraries, including many San Diego County libraries. Libraries then, from my young perspective, felt grand, special, and endless.
My love of libraries continued into college. I spent many, many evenings studying at the University library. That is where I studied and also flirted with my now husband (the grandson of a librarian) and father of my two children.
I am now raising two young children here in San Diego, close to my mother, and practicing speaking Spanish at home to make sure they benefit from and connect with their bicultural background. A big part of that is visiting the library. It wasn't until I had my children that I realized the amazing offerings of Spanish-language children's books available across the County. Whether we're with abuela at the La Mesa Library, or at our home library of Lemon Grove, we always know we will find amazing treasures to bring home and continue reading to our children in their heritage language. My daughter especially cannot get enough of going to the library—just like the women before her.
Thank you.
