More Than Books: Reasons The San Diego Library Matters To Me

The San Diego Public Library has been one of the most important “steady places” in my adult life. It’s a space where I can reset, learn, and keep moving forward.

Practically, the library has helped me find meaningful employment and continue growing professionally. I’ve attended resume-writing and interviewing skills workshops to strengthen how I present my experience, and I’ve spent countless hours on public access computers completing schoolwork, filling out applications, and handling the real-life details that matter; scanning, printing, and submitting documents. When my budget was tight and I couldn’t afford internet access at home, being able to check... Continue reading

I’ve been going to the library ever since I was a kid. I fell in love with the library because I could check books out without having to pay for any of it. All I had to do was scan my library card and the books were temporarily mine. I grew up with older parents and we were poor so having that library card made me feel rich. My parents couldn’t afford a computer for me to do my school work so I loved that the library also gave me access to finish my work and if I needed to... Continue reading

I am so grateful to our library for being not just a resource for my children, for inspiring them to read and explore the world through books when they were young and hosting interesting and enriching events as they grew, but it has given me my own outlet to learn, escape, feel, and connect through its vast audio library. I can't imagine life without always having an audiobook checked out!

Growing up, my mom would take me and my sisters to the library.

In the summers, the free lunch program fed me and my sisters when we didn’t have the school lunches.

Throughout the year, the library fed our mind with the programs they had available for kids. Tutoring help on Mondays, crafts on Tuesdays and story time on Wednesdays. And not to mention wonderful librarians who extended their kindness and wisdom to us.

The library was a safe place my family and I could go to during hard times.

Now that I am an adult, 27, I am forever... Continue reading

From reading and research at SDPL, I wrote my own nonfiction book

by USN veteran, about 1 month ago

From reading and research at SDPL and elsewhere, I wrote a 300-page book about how the U.S. military modernized itself after the Vietnam War, specifically in Navy ships often based here in San Diego. Library materials enabled me to place interviews and my own experiences into contexts and to recognize priorities. SDPL staff obtained for me an important research paper. Titled Electronic Greyhounds: The Spruance-class Destroyers, my book was published by the Naval Institute Press in 1995. I took my family to Europe on the royalties. SDPL itself had my book in its collection for decades.

    I love our local libraries!

As a newly moved immigrant in 2007, libraries were one of the few places where I sought to read and relax after schools. I learned that libraries are also wonderful centers for the community to gather and work out and learn. They were also places where we can seek resources of many different kinds. It is 2026 and I still love going and learning and meeting great people. I feel like the libraries are one of the few safe spaces in the neighborhood I can come to develop myself. Thank you for all the patient librarians out there. You all... Continue reading

I live in east county and I had four kids in a relatively short period of time. A love of books drew me in to the county library in our area. The children’s song alongs and story times kept me coming back at first. The air conditioning in the summer and dry roof in the winter was a bonus! It’s hard to look through the books myself with several small children trying to climb the shelves, but my sister in law told me to request online and pick up on my regular trips in. That changed the game. After that... Continue reading

    Library Sundays

Every weekend, my 4 year old son and I look forward to visiting the library and then walking to the park nearby. I'm a working mom who recently had a baby so this is one of the few special one-on-one times I get to have with my oldest. He likes to use the computer for games immediately but he has learned so much from the educational games on there. When the timer is up, he gets off with no issue and runs off to look at books. He checks out his favorite series , share books with the other kids... Continue reading

by Syed, about 1 month ago
Library is literally a therapy time for me .

Iam always around library either reading, checking out books or in line to get books on hold.A book opens a new world to fly ,observe and learn with out moving an inch from your spot.So reading is a therapeutic and library is the most loved place .So thankful for the library and the kind library staff at 4sRanch County Library. My kids love the library too .They indulge in books and our weekly library visiting ritual is so fun and knowledgeable. Thankyou
