More Than Books: Reasons The San Diego Library Matters To Me
The San Diego Public Library has been one of the most important “steady places” in my adult life. It’s a space where I can reset, learn, and keep moving forward.
Practically, the library has helped me find meaningful employment and continue growing professionally. I’ve attended resume-writing and interviewing skills workshops to strengthen how I present my experience, and I’ve spent countless hours on public access computers completing schoolwork, filling out applications, and handling the real-life details that matter; scanning, printing, and submitting documents. When my budget was tight and I couldn’t afford internet access at home, being able to check out Mobile Wi-Fi made a huge difference in staying consistent and not falling behind.
The library has also supported my overall wellbeing. I’ve taken adult dance lessons as a fun, healthy way to stay active and connected. Sewing classes helped me learn practical skills such asdarning socks and making simple clothing repairs, which has saved me money. Language and cultural programs have improved my Spanish-speaking skills and introduced me to interests I might not have explored otherwise. I’ve also loved using reduced-fare or free passes to state parks and museums, which has made it possible to “play tourist” in my own city. And I’ve enjoyed engaging in hands-on sustainability efforts like the seed library and Fix-It Clinics, which make community support feel tangible and empowering.
Beyond the services, the library consistently inspires me. Author and local program showcases leave me feeling motivated and grounded, and I love walking into a branch and seeing art installations, community displays, and creative programs—Monarch Schools Poetry is my absolute favorite. Those experiences turn a routine library visit into something uplifting.
I’ve also relied on the library for the not-so-exciting side of adulting. Federal and state tax workshops have helped me feel more confident and less overwhelmed during tax season.
To me, the library matters because it’s equal parts opportunity, support, and belonging—a place that quietly helps people build stability, confidence, and connection across San Diego County, and a place I genuinely rely on as I keep growing into the person (and professional) I’m working to become.
And that’s just my experience. The positive impact I’ve observed goes even further—youth and school-aged programs like baby sign language, family movie nights, tutoring services, and resources like the I-CAN Center that make learning and support more accessible for people who need additional assistance. I’ve also seen people completing their GEDs, gaining access to mental and physical health resources, finding housing support, connecting to substance abuse treatment, building computer skills, and so much more.
