Building Children’s Future

Growing up, my mom would take me and my sisters to the library.

In the summers, the free lunch program fed me and my sisters when we didn’t have the school lunches.

Throughout the year, the library fed our mind with the programs they had available for kids. Tutoring help on Mondays, crafts on Tuesdays and story time on Wednesdays. And not to mention wonderful librarians who extended their kindness and wisdom to us.

The library was a safe place my family and I could go to during hard times.

Now that I am an adult, 27, I am forever grateful to the library for extending their support. I am able to give back to my community. I hope that the library continues to stay open and provides more children with the same opportunities I received.

From reading and research at SDPL, I wrote my own nonfiction book

From reading and research at SDPL and elsewhere, I wrote a 300-page book about how the U.S. military modernized itself after the Vietnam War, specifically in Navy ships often based here in San Diego. Library materials enabled me to place interviews and my own experiences into contexts and to recognize priorities. SDPL staff obtained for me an important research paper. Titled Electronic Greyhounds: The Spruance-class Destroyers, my book was published by the Naval Institute Press in 1995. I took my family to Europe on the royalties. SDPL itself had my book in its collection for decades.

The Library in our community is a great resource for finding books to read without having yo own it. I also can cheout dad's pick up a day pass to the national park, purchase used books st a premium. Do research and pick up tax forms. The staff is very friendly znd helpful. Even if I don't use it resources regularly am glad to know it's there. Just to imagine a building full of books and needed materials
