Consultation has concluded
Every year, the state and federal governments prepare and adopt new laws. This process is known as legislation. The Office of Economic Development and Government Affairs monitors state and federal legislation to act and respond to proposed laws that impact the County and its residents.
To direct this work, a Legislative Program is developed annually to outline the County’s policy direction and legislative priorities across a range of issues and subject areas that are anticipated to have a significant impact (positive or negative) on the County, its operations, budget, and the constituents we serve. These priorities help frame advocacy efforts throughout the year and reflect significant areas of interest for the County at the state and federal level. Examples include affordable housing, climate change, homelessness, equity and justice, transportation, and safety. Highlights of this advocacy work as well as the community impacts of that work can be found in the 2023 Advocacy Report.
Community feedback has been key to the County’s efforts to set legislative priorities that reflect the interests of San Diego residents. This year, that feedback was received during a Public Comment period that began on August 1st and lasted through October 5th. This period concluded with a Virtual Community Forum where members of the community were able to provide input and ask questions about the upcoming 2024 Legislative Program.
While the comments and input from the community were being gathered, the Government Affairs team also sought input from each of our County departments. Collectively, this feedback helped to inform the annual update to the Legislative Program.
The final step in this annual process was the public hearing on December 5, 2023, where the Board of Supervisors voted to adopt the final 2024 Legislative Program. You may also view the document online and select your preferred language.
