The County is updating its Guidelines for Cultural Resources (Guidelines), which were last approved in 2007. These Guidelines include:

1) Guidelines for Determining Significance for Cultural Resources

2) Report Format and Content Requirements for Cultural Resources

These documents work together to evaluate how a project could impact cultural resources under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The update will now include tribal cultural resources, following new state rules (AB 52) that took effect on July 1, 2015. The goal is to improve areas that need updates while keeping practices that are working well. Key changes include:

  • Adding tribal cultural resources to the Guidelines
  • Improving the process for consulting with tribes
  • Ensuring tribal governments' expertise and experiences are reflected in the Guidelines update

To make these updates, the County will work with tribes, consultants, and other stakeholders to gather feedback. Once a draft is ready, it will be shared with the public for review before being presented to the Board of Supervisors for consideration.
