What is the structure of the CFWB Department?

The CFWB Department consists of three primary Offices to provide the appropriate supports to families:

Office of Child and Family Strengthening: Efforts are focused on supporting all families and creating equitable pathways to wellness by providing early intervention services through First 5 San Diego, childcare initiatives, and family strengthening services to prevent child maltreatment.

Office of Child Safety: Efforts are focused on addressing situations of child abuse and neglect. Our approach includes traditional Child Welfare Services approaches of investigations, interventions, and mitigation of maltreatment.

Office of Administration: An internal support system to the Office of Child Safety and the Office of Child and Family Strengthening that consists of Policy and Program Support, and Fiscal and Contracts.

When did the CFWB Department begin its work?

The CFWB Department began its transition in July 2023 and will be a phased-in approach that will create a pathway focused on strengthening families within the County of San Diego.

    What is a prevention hub?

The vision for a prevention hub, once implemented, is to offer all families in the County of San Diego a connection to an array of prevention resources, networks of support, and services. The goal is for it to be easily accessible near places where people live and work, with potential future options such as a call center, drop-in locations, extended hours, and home visiting.

How will a prevention hub support families?

Every family has strengths, and every family faces challenges. When families are under stress—the car breaks down, someone loses a job, a child’s behavior is difficult, or even when the family is experiencing a positive change, such as moving into a new home—it sometimes takes a little extra help to get through the day. The concept for the prevention hub was approved by the San Diego Board of Supervisors on March 14, 2023. While it is still in the planning stages, the idea is that it will be a place where families feel welcome – knowing that their strengths are celebrated and options for support are available in real time.

CFWB will partner with families by recognizing that families are the experts on themselves. That means listening to what they say will work best about how agencies in the community and others can support them.
