Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health - Vaccine Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs

The Immunization Unit within the Epidemiology and Immunization Services Branch (EISB) received funding through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) project. The purpose of the REACH funding is to increase awareness, confidence, demand, and access to flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

What is the V-KAB Survey?

• The Vaccine Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs (V-KAB) survey was created to help the Immunization Unit understand how people in our community think and feel about vaccines and why people do or don’t get vaccines.
• The answers from the survey will help create better information and messages about vaccines for everyone in the County. Vaccine campaigns will be designed based on what we learn from the survey results.

How Can Health Messages Fit San Diego's Different Cultures and Neighborhoods?

• The purpose of engaging the community is to identify if differences in knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs exist in communities based on cultural/racial/ethnic or geographic locations. Since San Diego has such a diverse population, we aim to determine how or if messaging should be tailored based on race/ethnicity and zip codes.
• Based on the responses from the survey, if it is apparent that the responses tend to be similar for groups that share race/ethnicity or zip codes, then tailored messages will be developed to address the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and barriers of each specific group so they feel heard and see themselves and hear their concerns being addressed.
• A new COVID-19, flu, and other adult vaccine campaigns will be developed in September/October. However, we would like to continue the survey for at least a year and perhaps change the dates to continue the survey in future years to see if knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs change over time.
