Why is the County involved in Star Valley Park and Butterfield Trails Ranch?
In 2021, the Valley Center Park and Recreation District was dissolved, and the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) assumed responsibility for managing Star Valley Park. In 2023, the County also acquired the Butterfield Trails Ranch property to develop additional public park space for the Valley Center community.
What is the goal of the current park planning project?
The County aims to gather community input to guide the development of park improvements and recreational amenities at Star Valley Park and Butterfield Trails Ranch. This includes exploring the possibility of creating an intergenerational center and other features that reflect local needs and preferences.
How much funding is currently allocated for this project?
The County’s Fiscal Year 2024-25 Budget includes $1 million dedicated to public engagement and initial planning for the two park sites.
How can the community provide input on the parks?
The County will engage the community through public meetings, participation in local events, and surveys. Community feedback will play a key role in shaping the vision and priorities for each park.
Will both sites have the same amenities?
Not necessarily. The final amenities and programming at each site will be determined based on-site analysis, community feedback, and feasibility assessments.
When will the parks be developed?
Initial planning and engagement efforts are currently underway. Funding for the design and construction phases will be requested in future years, depending on the outcomes of the planning process and budget availability.
What is an intergenerational center?
An intergenerational center is a shared community space that offers programs and amenities for people of all ages—children, adults, and seniors—encouraging interaction and connection across generations.
