EMS System Redesign Underway in San Diego County

San Diego County has launched a major overhaul of its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) delivery system, aimed at creating a more coordinated, efficient, and equitable EMS network across the region.

Guided by a new EMS Delivery System Redesign Steering Committee and Core Group, the project is focused on implementing key recommendations from recent trauma and base hospital reports authorized by the Board of Supervisors in August 2024.

Key goals include:

  • Improving hospital notifications and reducing radio traffic
  • Real-time hospital status updates and system management
  • Faster and more consistent online medical direction
  • Data-driven quality management and enhanced collaboration across stakeholders

The redesign emphasizes transparency, innovation, and patient-centered care. Monthly and bimonthly meetings will keep this project's momentum. Pilot programs, tech upgrades, and new policies will be rolling out in phases through 2025 and beyond.

Stay tuned as San Diego builds a next-generation EMS system to better serve all communities countywide.
