The County is hosting a series of three ad-hoc subcommittee meetings to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance County operations, improve services for our 3.3 million residents, while creating a responsible AI framework. We’re bringing together industry experts, our Chief Information Officer, community stakeholders, and the public to discuss how AI can transform County services while aligning with our community values.

The ad-hoc subcommittee, co-chaired by Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas and Supervisor Joel Anderson, will begin these public meetings on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2024. The insights and recommendations gathered will shape an AI strategy, with findings presented to the full Board of Supervisors in early 2025.

We value public input throughout this process. Your questions, comments, and suggestions are essential in ensuring that AI initiatives reflect community priorities and County values. All feedback will be shared with the Board for consideration.

Background

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables machines to perform tasks like recognizing patterns, making predictions, and creating new content. The most popular form, generative AI, produces new content by identifying patterns in large datasets. For example, tools like ChatGPT can respond in natural language, making them useful in customer service, creative writing, and more.

As AI technology advances, public agencies are exploring how it can be used responsibly. To stay at the forefront, the County has joined the GovAI Coalition—a network of over 300 government agencies committed to safe, transparent, and purposeful AI use.

The subcommittee will focus on evaluating AI’s potential to improve County services while aligning with the County’s core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
